Beaulieu Motor Cycle World 2001
The Event
The
Portsmouth and District Sidecar Club have exhibited at the event
since the first event, which was about six years ago.
|
|
It started as a one day event but has now extended to
two days. The first event featured auto jumble but now
has mostly Club and Trade Stands with numerous displays
in the Arena.
We do not expect to attract new members
to our club but hope to offer advice on sidecar issues and to promote sidecars and the FoSC with
our presence Needless to say we also go to enjoy ourselves.
Entrance to the event includes all the Beaulieu attractions,
the Motor Museum, Abbey, Gardens, and more.

The Journey No problem with this one. Paul and
I left at about 8 am. West along the M27 and turn left just
after Southampton on the A326 and follow the signs to Beaulieu. While
on the M27 we were overtaken by a scooter! he was doing well
over 90 mph.
Arrival We were the first of the Portsmouth crowd
to arrive at the stand.

The Culm Vale Sidecar Club were exhibiting this year and had three stands next door to us. Very
sociable.
It is difficult to know how many
members will attend. I had booked two stand spaces. There was not enough room.
Luckily we were at the edge of the field
and we were able to use the adjacent service vehicle area as an overflow

|
Len Salisbury had camped overnight. Other Portsmouth members arrived before
10. John Yarham arrived with display boards and
photos in his trailer. The sun was out, as it was all over
the weekend.
Paul was soon playing with Geof Sweets' son Peter. Geof
asked if he could take Paul with Peter to look round the show. They
must have found plenty to do, I did not see them again until
gone 5 p.m... I had a look round the show but mostly loafed
about on our stand. One of Rogers grandsons was taking part
in a motor cycle display in the arena. Roger was charged
with recording it with his sons new camcorder.

Sidecar Manufacturers were well represented
Charnwood Classics - Exhibits included a Gold Wing with EZS Rally.
Wasp - Featured a number of trials outfits and an example of their leading link forks.
Merlin - Ken Minns had travelled down from Durham with two outfits to support
his new southern agent. |

The importer for Ural also had a stand featuring outfits.
There were numerous other club stands. A number were very serious
about their presentation, others like ourselves were less formal.
Trade stands catered for most motorcycle requirements
ranging from the major manufacturers to camping accessories. I bought a new compact sleeping bag. |
|
Paul and Sue Jones had a 'For Sale'
notice on their outfit hoping to find a buyer at the show. The
price was reduced to 1000 pounds. Roger Farleys' Fiat
Special attracted the most interest, as always.
As
the crowds died away in the late afternoon Rob Verrier and
son Vince came round on their new F2 Outfit. They were
exhibiting elsewhere in the show and displaying in
the arena.

Rob had purchased and collected it Thursday evening arriving
home in the early hours of Friday morning. It is only
three years old and Rob is expecting great things when he races
it in a couple of weeks. He is looking for a 100 mph lap
of the Isle of Man before he retires.

Saturday evening and I was chatting with Geof on the Culm
Vale Stand. Dave Nash handed out bubbly and cake. It was his
50th birthday.
Later in the evening it was
all down to the marquee where there was a bar and live band. Paul
managed to get lost which put me in a panic but he turned up
before too long.

Sunday The new sleeping bag worked fine. Breakfast,
then more loafing on the stand and answering questions from
passers by. I took Paul round the arena and for a trip on
the Mono Rail Train. We both enjoyed the experience and
views over Beaulieu. Paul and I were suffering from the sun
so we left early at about 2 p.m.
The Show has been getting bigger over the years but no less
enjoyable.
I must book more stand space next year.
