The Antonov An 225 is without doubt the worlds largest aircraft.  Here it is seen with the space craft Buran mounted on the upper fuselage. As far as I am aware the An 225 made its one and only appearance in the West at the 1989 Paris Airshow.  The payload is 50 tons more the the An124 Ruslan, with which the An 225 has a high degree of commonality.  The tail section has a larger span then the wings of many civil airliners.

A military version of the Fokker Friendship, it first  entered airline service in 1955.  Powered by two of the famous Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engines, it continues to give excellent service with short-haul  airlines world-wide.

The Lockheed C 5A Galaxy   on entering service in 1968 was the largest transport aircraft in the world, and remained so until the advent of the Antonov An 124.  The Galaxy is powered by four General Electric TF39-GE-1 turbofans of 41,000 lb. (18,600 kg) each.  It has a fully loaded weight of 769,000 lbs. (348,810 kg) and a range of 3,749 miles.  The maximum speed is 571 mph (919 km/h) the ceiling is 34,000 feet (10,360 m)

All the Boeing KC 135, and the Civil 707 range were developed from the Boeing private venture Model 367-80, the prototype was known as the Dash 80.  The 707 was the airliner that made low cost Trans-Atlantic available to all. A total of 724 KC 135 tankers were built, clearly making it the most prolific tanker ever produced.  Passengers or freight can be carried in the refuelling role.  Continual updating has meant that the KC 135 will still be in service for many more years.

The Boeing E 3 Sentry AWACS (airborne early-warning and control aircraft), is operated by the multi-national NATO AEWF. The R.A.F. operate their own version of this aircraft.  The aircraft is a further develepoment of the Boeing KC 135 series.
