Shepherd's Mill, Uley, One of the Few Remaining Buildings Previous   Contents    Next

This building was shown on the 1833 plan of the mill that survives in the Gloucestershire Record Office as the Great Factory (ST 793 983).

The Mill had three steam engines supplied by the Boulton and Watt Company from Birmingham. It was reputed that £50,000 had been spent on machinery and buildings.

A thousand people were put out of work when Sheppard became bankrupt in 1837.  Some of these went to work in mills in other parts of the country to work in other mills while others went to South Wales to work in the iron works there.  At this time Merthyr Tidfyl was the iron capital of the World.  It is known that some emigrated to America and Australia and others went to work on Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway under construction between London and Bristol.

The premises were sold for just £2300 and became an ironworks and later a sawmill.
