SAILING

The year 2000 Friday Evening Series wa executed with gusto with the third race in the series producing 9 starters. Our thanks are due to the O'Ds who have set good courses and conducted the races in fine style. At present 'SHE' and 'STARLIGHT' arc in close contention for the top slot. The competitors have enjoyed the hospitality of the RDYC after racing and the series has been both friendly and successfitl.

The Cherbourg Race on 9th June 2000 was bctter supported than last year with 8 yachts on the start line. The innovation this year was the VHF countdown for the start which worked well. The Race Officer, lan Johinstone, conducted affairs in a masterly fashion. After an initial period of flukey winds, the wind increased to a brisk South Westerly and all yachts were able to lay a course for Cherbourg most finishing within daylight. The results for 2000 were:

1st Division I. 'GOSSIP'
1st Member Division I. 'HINER'
1st Freke Rule 1. 'MONIQUE'.

Last year a dinner was arranged in the Cherbourg Yacht Club for the competitors which proved to be a most enjoyable evening although there were a few sore heads for the return trip on Sunday. The Club can be justly proud of ruaning such a successfull event. Hopcfully there will be more entries next year.

There is a pursuit race in Weymouth Bay on Saturday 28th June 2001. The next race will be the Lulworth Race followed by the Yacht Clubs of Weymouth Regatta 20th to 22th July 2001. The Maudsley Cup race on 13th July 2001.

The Club is hosting the J24 National Championships 13th to 16th September 2001and volunteers are rcquired to assist with the Casino Evening for the competitors on a date to be chosen. About 30 yachts are expected to attend.
