Commentary
February 2000 was quite a busy month (for Exeter's standards) with the
highlight probably being the flock of light aircraft which visited on the
5th. They brought delegates to a pilot's conference which was being held at
the airport. Diversions from Plymouth and Bristol, due to the now familiar
bad weather which can strike at both of those fields, were noted on several
days with the familiar Brymon, Sabena, Air 2000 and JEA types noted. One
Brymon surprise was the European Air Charter BAe.111 G-AVMY which was
operating a Glasgow to Bristol flight. Futura commenced operations with
their Boeing 737-800s, initially using PH-HZD in a partial new colour scheme.
The majority of the Futura fleet is now being painted in the blue and white
colours and several visited. Jersey European's new Dash 8 Q200 G-JEDX was
delivered in as C-FDHV via Liverpool. It was flying the next day in it's
British marks and went off to Gloucestershire Airport to practice steep
aproaches before entering service on the London City to the Isle Of Man route.
Several "new" Bae.146s were noted with JETS for maintenance during February.
G-OINV arrived from Australia and G-MABR from Aberdeen via Norwich (both for
British Regional). G-GNTZ had it's BA colours stripped off whilst G-DEBC
arrived for maintenance, both are due to go to British Midland Commuter.
G-DEBF arrived from Luton, the last to leave Debonair's former home, and is
now stored. With the JEA fleet of F.27s now with BAC Express and scattered
around Europe, it was nice to see the Amerer Air and Skyteam examples
visiting. Other airline operations continued more or less as in January with
Tyrolean, Air 2000 and Air Europa opreating their regular rotations.
Britannia operated one day trip with a Boeing 757 to Venice.
I thought that the biz-jet season at Exeter usually ended at Christmas.
Whilst the quantity of these visitors has diminished from the autumn and
early winter numbers, they keep coming in. There were a couple of newcomers
in theform of Citations N550PF and I-FARN as well as Citationjet D-IWIL.
Falcon 50 F-GMOT visited on a couple of occasions and a "new" Falcon 20 to
Exeter was F-GBRF. Learjet 60 OY-LJD was a welcome sighting as was the
Learjet 36A HB-VIF. A couple of years ago the sight of a biz-jet at Exeter
out of the "shooting season" was very rare indeed but, whilst not quite up
to Farnborough or Luton standards, they are now becoming more commonplace.
On the lighter side, there arre some new residents to report. Cirrus SR.20
N124CD is (I believe) the first of it's type in the country and is registered
to an owner at Land's End. Cessna 172 G-BSHR now resides with the Celtic West
Flying School and Cherokee Arrow IV G-BPZM is sheltered within Hangar 52 on
the northside.
Helicopters came into their own this month with several interesting military
and civillian types noted. The Rackenford based Brantley B.2 G-ROTR paid
several visits for training as did the new Somerset/Dorset Air Ambulance
Bolkow 105 G-NAAB. The aircraft is in full Automobile Association colours
and is to be based at Yeovil (where they know a thing about helicopters).
Another AA Air Ambulance to call in was the Agusta A.109 G-TVAA. Continuing
the theme of yellow whirlybirds, Westland's EH.101 Merlin (Cormorant?) I-LIOI
was noted training on several days out of Yeovil. Despite the first
deliveries of the EH.101 to the Royal Navy and the development aircraft for
the RAF flying, this bird has remained very elusive at Exeter. There has
been an increase in the number of Chinooks and Pumas recorded visiting
Exeter to unprecedented levels. At one time these two types were hardly ever
seen in the Southwest of England. Since the creation of the Joint Helicopter
Force however, they now come down to this part of the world very frequently
to exercise with the Royal Marines. There were only a couple more noteworthy
military visitors to comment upon. A Belgian Air Force Hercules visited on
the 1st and a French Navy Falcon 10 (MER) overshot on the 21st on it's way
to Birmingham.
