COMMENTARY

July was a strange month. There were many movements but little that really
caught the eye! Air Europa commenced a Sunday morning (07:00 - 08:00)
Mallorca flight with Boeing 737 EC-FZZ, which is to run until the end of
the summer season. British European received their final Dash 8Q300 when
C-GIDW was delivered on the 7th. It was noted as G-JEDF the following day
and has been used on services from Exeter ever since. I am told that the
Dash 8Q400s, which are due for delivery next year, will all be in Air France
colours and used on the franchise routes. British European also introduced a
Saturday Canadair RJ flight from and to Belfast for July and August only.
This meant that on the 8th there were two Canadair RJ operations when
Tyrolean put in an appearance as well. Air Jet's BAE.146 F-GMMP was delivered
in for servicing and re-registry as G-ZAPO with Titan Airways and a flurry of
Braathens Malmo '146s also visited the re-named British European Aviation
Services (BEAS). The Aer Lingus example EI-CSL, bound for City Jet, also
spent some time in the maintenance hangar.

The 15th saw the visit of a British Airways Concorde for the annual Bay of
Biscay supersonic flights. For some though, the Piaggio Avanti of Ferrari
I-FXRB was the star of the day! Those who missed it by going to Yeovilton
Air Day would have caught up with it in the static display at Farnborough!
The number of business aircraft noted at Exeter during July and August is
traditionally low. Just preparing us for the autumn rush I suppose! There
were some interesting examples here though. Falcons HB-VMN (a '20) and
VP-BSL (a '50) called in on the 6th with a Citation D-CCCF the following
day. Formula One's Learjet 31 N2FU called in on a couple of occasions,
mainly in conjunction with the ongoing work on their BAE.146 G-OFOM.
Another Swiss visitor was BAE.125 HB-VIL on the 10th which was, perhaps,
eclipsed by the Benneton Challenger I-BEWW earlier that ame morning. Hang
on...I've mentioned Formula One, Ferrari and Benneton in this piece. Is there
an Exmouth Grand Prix next year? Could rival Monaco! The Private Air
Gulfstream 4 HB-ITX which arrived on the 12th stayed for a couple of days
and a Hawker 1000 (or BAE.125-1000 if you prefer) D-CBWW called in on the
16th. Falcon 100 N844F visited on a couple of occasions and was first noted
on the 17th. There were two Falcon 20's on the 19th when F-GYSL visited and
"went tech" and F-GPYB came along to pick up the passengers. VP-CBW, a
Gulfstream 4 of Rolls Royce, made a 10 minute stop on the 21st to pick up a
passenger bound for Farnborough. Another Falcon, this time a '50, F-GMOT
called in on the 22nd and was joined by a Mitsubishi MU-2 N973BB. On the
31st Citationjet D-IRON visited and, following an increasing trend, parked
on the northside as it stayed for several days. Dornier 228 D-CALM refuelled
on the 21st whilst operating within military training areas near Plymouth
and also Bovingdon in Dorset.

Just as John Skillings and I were telling the chairman of the Exeter Flying
Club that the RS.180 Sportsman G-VIZZ is a very rare type of aircraft with
only a few dozen built another one turned up! D-EFBH stayed for several days
and was joined by a Jodel DR.105 OO-PHR which, interestingly, has tufts of
wool all over the upper serfaces of it's starboard wing. Well, I thought it
was interesting! D-IYES, a Piper Cheyenne, visited twice but the most
interesting "light" visitor was Grumman Goose N4575C which diverted in on
the evening of the 8th with a technical problem. It departed the following
day. Also on the 8th there was a Swiss Beech Baron and French Cessna 177A to
admire. A French Gazelle (F-GGTJ) called in on the 16th. Some light twins
were noted later in the month with King Air 200 F-GGPR, Seneca OO-GHM,
Partenavia P.68I-GAUS, Cessna 310 N310KZ and Cessna 421Cs N2683Y and D-IHLK
being the pick.
