COMMENTARY
The airport did not really suffer from the effects of the fuel crisis
although, at one stage, there was a threat that the airport might run
out of supplies. A delivery was made just in time to prevent any major
problems. An ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) was noted
on VHF frequency 119.325 making test transmissions. For the uninitiated,
an ATIS is an automatic weather and airfield conditions reporting system.
Apparently the system did not perform as well as hoped and has been
returned to the manufacturers for "tweaking". I hope they kept the box
and didn't pop all of the bubble wrap! A couple of other radio frequencies
that may be of interest for those with scanners with a UHF capability
were noted being used by the ground handling operation and by ATC. They
are 459.900 for operations (includes the marshallers etc) and 459.575 for
ATC to talk to vehicles on the airfield etc.
Two surprise airliner visitors during September were Boeing 737s G-OBWY
of British World on the 14th and the first '700 to visit, OY-MRE of Maersk,
on the 28th. They were both involved in trooping flights to and from
Pristina in Kosovo. This was also (unsurprisingly) the first time Pristina
had ever been a destination from Exeter! Also on the 14th a BAE-111 of
European Aviation called in with passengers from a Plymouth bound ferry
which had broken down. Atlantic Airways BAE.146 OY-RCA visited BEAS for
re-registry as G-CLHE for a six month lease to British Midland Commuter
on their Lufthansa services. Several other aircraft from the BM Commuter
BAE.146 fleet were also noted. Fokker F.27 G-JEAF returned from it's lease
to Eureca (as I-JEAF) on the 27th and spent some time on the northside
along with the two Euroceltic examples G-ECAH & G-ECAT. All of the IT
flights maintained their usual schedules (is no-one going to get the
registrations of the Sunday evening Eurocypria A.320s?) and there was
nothing out of the ordinary to report. Spanair did use a couple of their
"new" MD.83s in the shapeof EC-HNC and 'HOV though.
The most exotically registered biz-jet to visit was BAE.125 YL-VIP on the
24th - although it is fairly common at other UK airports. There were a
smattering of Gulfstreams including both Wrigleys examples on the same
day! A Gulfstream 3 N155MM (c/n 325) foxed most people as it was a new
one to us all. As usual the Citation in it's various forms was the most
poular mode of executive transport with British, French and American
registered examples noted. There were also French Falcons (a '10, a '20,
a '900 and a '2000) as well as a German Challenger and Learjet for the
biz buffs. Two US registered Super King Air 300s visited during the month
as did perennial visitor Cessna 425 N425HS from Antwerp. The shooting
season must be on it's way - Falcon 20 PH-BPS reappeared!
An Irish registered Glasair visited along with a British example on the
3rd whilst the 16th saw two Beagle Pups - a type which is quite rare here
these days. A couple of rarely seen residents were also noted. Horizon
G-BYBL and Lancair G-PJMT do not often see the light of day and were both
recorded for the first time this year.
Exeter residents list can be found on
this link.
