The major "happening" at Exeter Airport during September was the airfield attack by ten Belgian Air Force F-16s on the 2nd. Celebrating the retirement of the Wing Commander these aircraft, from 10 Wing at Kleine Brogel, attacked singly before forming up into two flights of five and overflying in two "V" formations and heading back to Belgium. Why chose Exeter? The Wing Commander had trained for his commercial pilots licence with Airways Flight Training! The military was better represented than in most months. The Sea Kings returned to training on the ILS and were noted throughout the month. ZF117/VQ made an emergency landing on the 27th and was joined by Lynx HAS.3S XZ735/412 which was followed in by the fire engines the following day. This was much to the surprise of the Naval groundcrew who were still working on the Sea King! Hawks, Hercules, Gazelles, Pumas and Islanders were all regular callers here during the month. Two Harrier GR.7s visited on the 10th and spent some hours parked on the "D" hardstanding whilst an Irish Air Corps Beech 200 visited on the 9th. Two former military aircraft were noted and caused some interest. The first visit of a Soko Galeb (YU-YAB of course) occurred on the 13th. The crew were visiting to inspect the Dunkeswell based Quickie Q.2 G-BVYT pending a possible purchase. With the recent exodus of Hunters which has taken place (two have gone to North Weald and two to Belgium) it was nice to se one arrive! The former Swiss F.58 J-4090 / G-SIAL - which of course has been a resident here before - flew in on the 26th for Classic Jets. With the hunting season upon us the Biz-Jet season has also started. For once there were some interesting BAe.125's to note. Two Swedish examples, SE-DYE and SE-DYV were noted alongside N816QS and HB-VKW. A relatively rare type these days is the Jetstar 731. VP-BRL visited on the 26th and stayed for a couple of days. Perhaps rarer, especially here, was the Boeing 727 HZ-HR3 which nightstopped on the 23rd. This may return as the owner's daughter has recently commenced a period of study at the University of Exeter. As usual Citations and Falcons were the dominant executive types noted with several "old favourites" along with some first time visitors calling in. Examples of the less usual machines were the Citation 650 CS-DNF, Falcon 20s F-GYSL and HB-VNM. The Falcon 900 F-GYOL was also a first timer. The Learjet was not to be excluded with two German examples, D-CCON and D-CMMM noted. Executive twins were another source of first time and unusual visitors. Finnish Navajo OH-PNB, Cessna 425 N425TV, Cessna 421s N26HE (with winglets) and N6869Z being the most noteable. Even two large helicopters got in on the act with the newly registered Sikorsky S.61N G-LAWS and a Bristows Super Puma G-BLXR (surely a long way from home) noted. Possibly the last Debonair flight out of Exeter was noted on Tuesday the 28th when G-DEBN flew out to Luton after attention by JETS. The airline went into administration just two days later (I hope JETS asked for cash)! Perhaps it was fitting that the aircraft was flown out by my old friend Captain Paul Carr who is Exeter born and bred! There were many other '146s noted with JETS this month with the Manx and British Regional Airlines fleets predominating. No Malmo this month, but expect some between now and Christmas. Incidentally, G-JEAM is due to come back to JEA shortly. Shorts 360s were also prominent with several examples including SE-IXE and D-CCAS and several of the Loganair fleeet visiting. Spanair sent in one of their "new" MD.83s, EC-HFP, but there were no real surprises from the rest of the regular operators. It made a change to see European Aviation BAe.111s operating the charters to Lourdes instead of the British World examples that we have hitherto seen. Jersey European's new Dash Eights continue to arrive with G-JEDA,'B & 'C delivered as I write this. G-JEDD is due at the end of October, 'JEDE at the end of November and 'JEDF on New Year's Eve. The first CRJ, G-JECA, is also due during late October. On the debit side, two of the Fokker F.27s have been placed with a german company by BAC leasing and G-JEAF is going to Eureca of Italy as I-JEAF. Save huge painting bills I suppose!Exeter residents list can be found on this link.
