RISC User ...in a Nutshell
The pages within this section are an online preview of the RISC User ...in a Nutshell CD-ROM, which was originally published in limited-edition form by Beebug Ltd and which is now available from R-Comp Interactive. The Nutshell CD was produced to commemorate the end of life of RISC User magazine, which spanned twelve years from late 1987 to early 2000.

The CD contains a vast amount of material: there's a total of nearly 640Mb of software and resources, all of it highly compressed. The CD's contents comprise all available backup files relating to RISC User magazine and its associated magazine discs (120 issues), plus several commercial software packages, books, photographs and other resources:
- Magazine files: all available RISC OS-format files for volumes 8 to 12 (Ovation Pro format from issue 11:5), plus Mac files for volumes 1 to 7;
- Discs: every single RISC User Disc and end-of-volume Special Disc;
- Software: a wide range of full, commercial software packages including ArcScan III, Basic and Wimp Programmer's Toolkits, ChartWell, DeskEdit 4, a wide variety of games, PlayBack, PolyGlot, RISC User fonts discs, TextAid and more;
- Books: source files for four complete books: Wimp Programming for All (with associated software disc), Getting Into Ovation and Internet and PC Survival Guides;
- Bonus items: all sorts of interesting extras including digital photographs, other images and clip-art, desktop backdrop tiles, unpublished material, resources and utilities relating to RISC User, and altogether too many other items to list here!
The material is all bound together by a comprehensive HTML front-end which features the ability to launch software and resources from the CD with a single click.
This online preview contains the full HTML front-end for the material on the CD, but without the material itself. All the links to software, resources, pictures and so on have been disabled, so you can explore the contents of the CD without actually being able to access them. On the real CD, a clever system allows the software and resources to be run directly from the CD archives just by clicking the links in the HTML front-end, with no need to decompress or save anything to your hard drive first. The presentational style of the front-end mimics the printed magazine.
