The Welford Ghost While the idea of a ghost on an airfield is not a new idea , Welford is rumoured to have a ghost of a monk. In a letter to the Friends and Veterans of Welford, Michael Hardy recalls that many of the visitors to the priory house reported seeing a figure of a Monk flitting about . There was also strange footsteps in the upstairs rooms when the house was empty . During repairs to the house in the 1920s a skeleton of a dead chicken was found in the room at the top of the stairs . It had laid an egg before it died. The idea in the 16th /17th century was that if there was a troublesome spirit in the house you walled up a laying Pullet when it laid an egg before it died then it was believed that the ghost was "Laid Up " to . Clearly it did not work. In recent times no sightings of the monk have been reported . See Also The History Of The Welford Priory
