TOP TOWN POST OFFICE TO BE REBUILT

Extensive reconstruction planned for Grimsby's Head Post Office in Victoria Street over the next two-and-a-half years will give a completely new look to the 55-years old building.

One of the major transformations will be at the sorting and parcels office. This is being planned on two separate levels and will introduce mechanisation and the chain conveyor system.

The scheme, which will be carried out in three phases, means a temporary sorting office being set up in Holme St, off Pasture St.

The Holme Street office, will operate from next Monday, April 5th (1965).

New arrangements

"Because of this", the assistant Head Postmaster Mr AJ Curry, told the Evening Telegraph, "it will be necessary to make certain alterations to our existing mail arrangements. He went on to explain that, in general, this would mean all collections from the Victoria St office would be made half an hour earlier than at present. "But there will be a later collection at Holme St where a posting box will be available. This will be about 15 minutes after those at the Head Office".

Mr Curry said that because of the position of the Holme St office, certain collection routes would have to be revised. He went on:

"We have to be certain that our vans are not held up at the level crossing which is close to Holme St so we have re-planned our collecting routes." The effect of this is that some posting boxes will be cleared 15 minutes earlier than at present and others 15 minutes later. Notices will be displayed on all boxes drawing attention to the new times.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience to the public caused by these changes," Mr Curry went on, adding that he hoped the new office would be completed within 30 months.

The Phases

Phase one of the scheme is the move to Holme St. Certain work has to be carried out at the temporary office, including the laying of a new floor. This work will be followed by phase two, the construction of the front office in Victoria St. For which a short time the counter will be moved to the back of the office in Osborne St so that a new, straight counter can be built. The third phase will be the reconstruction of the sorting and parcels office.
