EVENING TELEGRAPH APRIL 1949
YOUR TELEGRAM,
SIR, BY MOTOR-CYCLE
Telegrams will soon be delivered to Grimsby's outskirts
for the first time by motor cycle messengers. Push bikes are being replaced
for delivery from G.P.O. town head quarters to outlying districts in a
bid to speed up services. First motor-cycle delivery will be made in a
few weeks.
NINE LUCKY LADS
Nine lucky postal telegraph boys are at present
learning how to ride five brand-new 150c.c. two-stroke machines.
Grimsby's head postmaster, Mr. T. P. Dews, said
today that the motor-cycles are part of a scheme to increase the efficiency
of the service. The mechanised service will not affect central Grimsby.
Mr. Dews feels that 'ordinary cycles can negotiate traffic in the centre
of the town much' quicker. But part-mechanisation of the service will mean
quicker delivery for some areas, and sound economy of manpower.
The boys have been, picked for their age and general
ability.Training is intense and
thorough. With his parents consent, each boy has been medically examined
and had his eyes tested. Some have
already
passed out and are awaiting delivery of protective clothing.
Said one of the lucky boys, 17-years-old Roy Pitcher,
of 79 Legsby Avenue: "I am thrilled to bits. For three years I have had
to push a vivid red cycle. Now I feel important.I
can I cover twice the distance in less time.''
