Grimsby Publication not know

Date (early 1900’s)

We Can almost see the new post office rising upon the ruins of Yarborough terrace. It is, already hard to recall the green and pleasant aspect of that bit of old Grimsby which one used to have to pass between home and business, aye, and harder still the oldrookeryon the other sine. Our picture thismorninggives a' good impression of what the new building is to be like. It will harmonise very well with the magnificent pile of masonry erected by the Union of London and Smith's BankPractically a start has already been made. Wires and tubes are being rapidly laid, and the actual building operationswill soon be in hand. As to space, we are told officially that the ground floor alone will provide more roam for postal work than at present exists in the St. Mary's-gate and Victoria-street offices put together. It is to be hoped it will, for the present accommodation is simply miserable. Many generations appear to have elapsedbefore the Grimsby Post Office could find, a home. First the business was done where Eason's shop stands at the' Market-place corner, then it was transacted in Bull-ring lane, and finally it found itself in West St. Mary's Gate, where it had to split itself up.Part ofitfound refugeinthe rabbit warrens, as the Cleethorpe-road corner Telegraph Office is called. Better days are happily in store. 'There will be abundant accommodationinthenew buildingin Victoria-street, and we welcome the prospect of seeing it completed. Zealous postal officials such as we have in Grimsby deserve to have a decent set of offices to work in.
