Historic Nantwich

Nantwich is a charming small market town straddling the River Weaver and is located in the southern parts of Cheshire. It played a prominent part in the English Civil War and was a focal point of many battles. Nantwich was also once the centre of flourishing salt works (remains can be viewed in the museum).

Present day Nantwich is a thriving small shop market town with a current population of approximately 30,000 inhabitants and growing speedily.

The focal point of the town is The Square which is the setting for the 14th century church, St Mary's - known as 'the Cathedral of South Cheshire'. The Church of St Mary originates from the early Norman period, being connected with the Cistercian community at the nearby Cumbermere Abbey. The chancel is particularly fine, with wonderful carvings in the choir stalls, which depicts scenes from medieval life.

Nantwich has an extremely rich history and a wealth of fine half-timbered buildings, including Churche's Mansion and the remains of a 14th-century castle. Churche's mansion is a charming half-timbered Elizabethan merchants house built in 1577 by Richard Churche. It was saved from export to America in 1930 and restored. It later became a fine-dine restaurant and more recently changed its presence to antiques.

There are two high schools in Nantwich - Brine Lees County High School and Malbank School and Sixth Form. Nantwich is also the home of Reaseheath Agricultural College.

If you are inclined, visit the Museum in Pillory Street. It stands next door to the former Nantwich jail and across the road is a replica of the original pillory. The museum has displays about the town's past including the leather industry and salt mining. There always seems to be small town areas being developed to keep in the theme of the market town - the Cocoa Yard is a small quaint area off Hospital Street. Here you will find two or three shops which include AC Graphics - a superb creative photography service.

The location of Nantwich is in the southwest area of the county of Cheshire, England - near to the Staffordshire and Shropshire borders. There are many places of interest in the town, and in the surrounding countryside, and the area draws thousands of tourists throughout the year.
