Burns Supper Saturday 26 January 2008 in the ‘Rec’ Hall, 22a Saughtonhall Avenue.

Another great night at the ‘Rec’ wi' a right guid supper in celebration of our national bard, Robert Burns.

Some great traditional Scottish food - all provided by committee members and famliy - and some of the best (and sometimes imaginative!) poetry. Morag Stevenson did the Selkirk Grace, Brian Carson delivered a virtuoso Address to the Haggis, and Kevin Williamson toasted the Bard with an entertaining (and informative) Immortal Memory.

We thought no tongue in cheek stereotype was left unturned in John Stevenson's humorous Toast Tae The Lassies until Gail Mullard topped it with her Reply Frae The Lassies.

Some toe-tapping music, was all followed by a wee reel or several to burn off the lbs (the dancing was ably explained by James and Sarah Graham, who brought organisation out of chaos and topped a great night that went on into the wee hoors).

Thanks to everyone who contributed and everyone who came and had a great night.

Music Evening hits the right note

The recent Music Evening was a great success. A huge thank you goes to Anne Scott for taking on much of the organisation of this and for accompanying the singers.

The evening saw a good varied programme with something for everybody. Thanks also to John Thompson, Gillian and Richard Gray, Cathy Scott, Seonaid Stevenson and Caroline Donald for their beautiful singing and to Joyce Wylie, Alexander and Eleanor Forsythe and Sophie Capaldi for their lovely playing.

The Jumble Sale was a little disappointing this year. It had been combined with a craft sale and car boot sale but the turn out was pretty poor mainly due to the weather. It was a pity as some of the craft stalls had some really interesting and unusual things.

If you missed it, there will be another chance to see some of the craft stalls at the Community Fayre. The money raised from these events is used for the upkeep of the hall and grounds.

However, it’s not all about raising money. A large part of what we do is about putting on events that members of the community can take part in and enjoy.

Burns Supper a right guid hoot

Real cock-a-leekie soup, the Chieftan o’ the Puddin’-race, neeps and tatties, crannachan and shortbread, all polished off with cheese, biscuits and port. Each course was interspersed with poetry or some funny speech or story.

How anybody managed to dance after all that, I don’t know, but we managed a reel or two. Nobody cared too much about stepping in the wrong direction or doing a figure of seven instead of eight (I’m sure the port helped with this!)

We were honoured to have as our guests Alan and Irene Mitchell, our local greengrocers who have recently retired. We wish them both all the best. There was a great turn out and everyone seemed to enjoy the night.

It was a real laugh and we’re sure the Bard would have approved.

Special thanks to Gail and Mike Mullard for helping to organise the night, and to our local butcher, John Brash for his continued support in supplying the fine fayre for our Burns Suppers. Lastly, but not least, thanks to the Association Members who pitched in to help with all dishes!
