Lands End to John O'Groats

A journey in more ways than one

Communication

How much effort you put into staying in touch with friends, family etc. will depend on how important it is to you that you do.

If a quick phone call every now and then is all you need, then there’s really no need to give it any thought. All you need is a payphone and you’re away.

I ended up with a list of people that wanted to be kept informed of progress, some of whom it would be difficult to contact by phone. I settled on sending a daily email from a Psion Series 5 palmtop and mobile phone. The other alternative for email would have been internet café’s, but I wasn’t convinced of the availability in some of the places I was staying.

I'd been using a Psion Series 3 for some time as a personal organiser and general all round handy gadget. It was about on it's last legs and I was thinking of replacing it anyway.

Once I'd decided that I also need something to handle email as well, I splashed out on the Series 5. Coupled with a mobile phone with an infra red port (Nokia 7110) it proved to be very reliable. As well as the usual PDA functions it was also useful for writing the diary, lists of alternative accommodation, spreadsheet for calculating the stats and numerous other tasks.

The only problem I had was with a lack of mobile signal in some of the more remote spots, it caused me a few problems, but I could usually manage to find a signal if I wandered around for long enough.
