One of the great attractions of St Vincent and the Grenadines is its mix of culture. It is a blend of centuries of English tradition, African heritage and more than a trace of French, all shaken together with West Indian and Creole customs, habits and life-styles.
This is reflected in island dance, music and folk music, costume and even cooking. And, Carnival, or Vincy Mas, is the time for all these ingredients to be put together for the celebration to end all celebrations.
The island boasts many talented artists and sculptors, wood carvers and potters. The St Vincent Craftsmen's Centre on the outskirts of Kingstown, illustrates the wide range of arts and crafts practised, from hand silk-screened clothing and wall hangings, to island jewelry, and from perfect replica model boats to paintings of island scenes, which provide a permanent memento of your stay on the island.
Bequia is noted for its model-boat makers, and up and coming artist Silvanus Simmons, who although only 19, is already an accomplished artist and modeller. Some of his murals of Bequia landscapes can be admired on the walls of the harpoon Saloon in Port Elizabeth, and elsewhere.
