Calypso songs, often highly political in intent, are a unique form of expression particular to the Windward Islands. These lyrical songs succeeded the sweet Negro spirituals of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Vincentian and Grenadine population is music crazy, and rhythmic from the cradle to the tomb. Steel pan bands became very popular after the war.
This unique form of music has now been recognised internationally, with recent homage to it made by the great French musician Jean-Michel Jarre at an open air concert in Paris, attended by thousands. You should not leave the islands without having heard such an orchestra.
Most resorts have a steel band playing on barbecue night. Reggae became popular in the early seventies with Bob Marley. The Shake orchestras with the hand-made calabash, bamboo, violin and guitar music is most colourful. You may have to go into the countryside and smaller localities to hear this music. The players also shuffle dance. Jazz lovers should go to the Attic in downtown Kingstown. International artists play here.
