St Vincent and the Grenadines has a population of about 107,000, and almost 99,000 live on St Vincent. Bequia's population is around 4,850, and Union Island about 1,900. Almost three-quarters of the population are of African origin, and another fifth are of mixed descent, there is a small minority of European descendants and a smaller group of East Indian descent. While there are few descendants of the originally Carib settlers, there is a small group of Black Caribs, of African-Amerindian descent, and a group which has figured prominently in the island's history.
The main language is English although a patois is widely spoken, but it is almost impossible for visitors to understand this. Almost half the population are Anglican and the other main religions are Roman Catholic and Methodist.
Primary school education is free but not compulsory, and most secondary school education is provided by bodies with religious affiliations.
St Vincent is divided into five parishes St George in the south which includes Kingstown, Charlotte which takes in most of the eastern side of the island, St Andrew which runs between Kingstown and Layou, St Patrick which runs between Layou and just south of Troumaca, and St David which covers the remaining north western part of the island.
