Shops are usually open between 8am and noon and 1pm to 4pm Monday to Friday, and between 8am to around noon on Saturday. There is an increasing trend for larger stores not to close over lunch, and to remain open later in the evening. There is a good range of souvenirs and gifts including locally made handicrafts, batik wear and goods, leather goods, wood carvings and paintings by island artists. Many of the T-shirts sold are hand painted, so do not be too dismissive.
There are also several shops selling duty-free goods such as jewelry, watches, perfumes, crystal glass figurines and china. Noah's Arkade on Ray Street, Kingstown, has gifts and several books about the island and its history, culture and folklore. The market is also a good source of interesting gifts, especially spices and products such as jams, jellies and syrups made from them.
Bequia is noted for its boutiques, studios and crafts shops. Gift ideas include local hand-painted articles and wall coverings, jewelry, and the famous Bequia hand-made model boats, on sale at Mauvin's Model Boat Shop and Sargeant Brothers Model Boat Shop, both in Port Elizabeth and just past the covered market The Crab Hole boutique, set in its wonderful gardens, offers equally wonderful clothes, hand silk-screened and sewn. You can watch the silk-screening process, and even have your own design printed. It also has a wide range of other gifts and souvenirs. Rastafashion on Friendship Bay produces hand-painted T-shirts, as well as local crafts and island jewelry.
Shops on Bequia are open between 8am and noon, or 9am and 1pm, and again between 2pm and 6pm - The three banks, Barclays, Caribbean Banking Corporation and National Commercial Bank, all in Port Elizabeth, are open Monday to Thursday 8am to 1pm, and on Friday from 8am to 1pm and 3pm to 5pm. The Post Office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to noon and 1pm to 3pm, and on Saturday between 9am and 11.30am
