Our Church

Click to see larger image On October 12th 1940, St. Wilfrid's feast day, the church was formally opened.
The decoration and furnishing of the church is largely the work of the Guild of St. Joseph and St. Dominic.
The exceptional and striking Stations of the Cross are the work of Sir Frank Brangwyn, the celebrated painter and engraver.   Only a very small number of the prints were made of his Stations and the plates were then destroyed.

The statue of St Wilfrid is thought to be of South German workmanship and to date approximately from 1525.

On the wall behind the altar on either side of the cross are Our Lady and St. John, flanked by St. Wilfrid and St. Richard of Chichester.

On either side of the sanctuary are bas-reliefs of St. Joseph and St. Theresa of Lisieux (The Little Flower).

"BY WATER AND THE HOLY SPIRIT- BE BORN AGAIN"

On 9th January 2000 our new font was blessed.   This beautiful font was designed and sculpted by stonemason Paul Wherle who is also a parishioner of St. Wilfrid's.

The Parish had decided that it wanted to do something special to mark the New Millennium, so many fundraising activities were held during 1999  - they included the Parish production of "Daybreak", a Burns Night, an Italian Evening, Quiz night, Coffee Morning, an Entertainment Evening and the Demijohn at the back of the Church in which coins were collected.   Placed in the font is a 'Time Capsule' containing photographs and details of Parish life in 1999.

The Parish Centre, which was opened in 1988 by Bishop Cormac Murphy-O'Connor (now Archbishop of Westminster),  is used by St. Wilfrid's Nursery Unit, for meetings, for badminton and for the many Parish social functions which take place throughout the year.   It is also available for hire
