POPISM #143 22.08.2002.

1. THE BYRDS - You won't have to cry (Mr.Tambourine man; Columbia) Of course, talkin' about the folk-rock jangle, this is more than obvious choice for an opener, ... which is naturaly followed with ...
2. THE IDEA - She has a way (Full circle-A tribute to Gene Clark; Not Lame) www.philangotti.com One of the world's latest FOLK-rock musical statements comes from NYC's ...
3. JOE MANNIX - Everyman (White flag; www.mannixrock.com) www.mannixrock.com ..... and also from the Big Apple, a tune lately reffered to as Brummels/Rubber Soulike, by ... 4. THE ROOKS - Better start right now (From the shelves of Soundscape studio; Not Lame) www.therooks.com www.notlame.com It rarely happens that some outtakes/demos/alternate-mixes collection can be equaled to the regular album release, and it's exactly the case with this one. As Michael says himself, if he can't make the song happen just with an acoustic guitar and voice, he simply drops it. Here, you'll find several examples that he can make 'em happen even without the voice, or even without the guitar, and it's really about time for the world to realise what we all did a long time ago, that The Rooks are one of the most important bands of the last decade, and probably a bit more. About the actual contents here ... If you ask me, it doesn't matter what version of "In a pinwheel spin" appears on the album, it'll always be among the strongest cuts on it, and this one has a Hammondized, Dylan-just-turned-electric feel, with the mouth-percussion much more significant in the mix. I'm not really into instrumental takes, but there are some special moments like the Elliot Ea-stoned, "incredible" folky/baroque atmosphere of "Music sound sensation" that makes me feel the way I felt while listening to Brian goin' through the 'vibrations takes with the Wrecking Crew, and that just can't be bad. Looking for some more acoustic ambience? .... try the version of "House of fortune" which sounds like a folky take on Abbey Road's "Because", or the rubber-soulful "Better start right now" with it's aerial vocal-harmony intro/outro, which is enough a reason to have this album, never mind the other countless ones. Can you imagine "Look" without any guitars in the mix?! ... well, it works fine with The Rooks, thanks to the rolling bass line, the sitar-like keyboard and a revolver-full-of-vocal-shots. Among many special guests in the studio, you must take notice of Richard X.Heyman's inspiring, practically first-take drum-parts on the beautifuly raw versions of "Glitter best" and "Colors". There's also an extra rare Michaeless vocal take on "Waiting" delivered by Kristin, giving it an almost obvious "pretending" feel, the alternate background vocals of "Nightwriter", which the author himself regrets abandoning, as well as the "Sloop John B-mix" of "Reasons", all together, making this an album that you'll be happy to take off the Soundscape shelves and put it onto your own. So, let's get on to some of Michael's jangly folky inspirations .... 5. THE BEAU BRUMMELS - I've never known (Volume 2; Sundazed) www.sundazed.com ........ and another one from the west coast ......
6. THE LEAVES - Too many people - single version ( ... are happening; Sundazed) www.sundazed.com Staying in the garagey folk jangle, but moving fast forward through time, we hit ...
7. THE OPTIC NERVE - What's been missing (Lotta nerve; Get Hip) www.gethip.com .... and then their labelmates, Bernie Kugel and .....
8. THE MYSITC EYES - One of the ones (The whole world is watching; Get Hip) www.gethip.com ...... and we surely couldn't miss the label's boss, here featured in the same folky-punk mood, Greg Kostelich and ...
9. THE CYNICS - Hand in hand (Get our way; Get Hip) www.gethip.com You can find out more about these bands and much more on : .... which leads us to another great label, run by The Cynics' spiritual guide , Erik Lindgren, who's found .....
10. THE LOST - Everybody knows (The lost tapes; Arf Arf) www.arfarfrecords.com We're "gettin' hip" in the moderndaze again with one of the recent POPISM entries goin' folky too ...
11. THE RESONARS - Everything you said (Lunar kit; Get Hip) www.gethip.com .... an idea of how would've an authentic sixteez band sound like, if time-transported into the moderndaze, along with their equipment and recording techniques, but also absorbing the musical experience of the '70s, '80 and '90s., and therefore making the perfect audio-mutant .... Basicaly, it's all about the exceptional harmony outbursts, backed by different mid-to-end '60s all-star line ups. (write for the whole review) .... off to Scotland then, to hear ...
12. THE KAISERS - Now's the time (Shake me!; Get Hip) www.gethip.com ..... Sometimes even more authentic than some of the original 6Ts bands .... all happily taken back to mono, which is where it's at ..... Liverpudlian take on those sounds from the records the sailors used to bring across the ocean, graced with FABulous multipart-harmonies .... fireing an unavoidable shot of r'n'beat ..... moody Mersey ballads, lighted up with some irresistable vocal harmonies .... (write for the whole review) ..... followed by one of the forefathers of our tonight's jangle-concept ...
13. THE SEARCHERS - He's got no love (The EP collection vol.2; See for Miles) Here's an excellent, contemporary take on what we're on about here ....
14. THE BEATIFICS - After all (The way we never were; Bus Stop) www.busstoplabel.com It's been five long years since the release of The Beatifics' debut album and, considering the standards it set in the contemporary power-pop circles, the follow up is something we all knew will be worth the wait, no matter how long it takes. Personally, I'd lay my bet on any band with such a name, even before I hear a note. After the apropriately titled "In the meantime" EP, considered a "beatifix", strong enough to make all ya beat-junkies who just couldn't wait any more, pull through until the long awaited second album, here comes the real thing! Though now it's practically just Chris Dorn, as a one man band, with whoever was available for help (including some ex-Beatifics too), the sound is fuller than ever ,featuring mellotrones, lotsa vintage sound effects, string arrangements and other instrumental exotics in all the right places. Most of the time, these songs remind me of an imaginary Velvet Crush compilation of all the hits they never wrote, but then again, it's probably just the same influences coming through. The album opens with "Sorry yesterdays" ,which starts almost like a different take of the freakbeatish audio "creation" "In the meantime" (also heard on the EP). The other songs that were on the introductory release are the ones that fall under the "big, starry eyed' acoustic balladery" tag , "Different stars" and "Outro", really sounding like an outro to a beautiful musical experience, and the one called "February" can also be added to this section. There's also a fine example of how an obvious Beatles-influence could be taken a step further, making a classic of it's own, and it's called "When it's whenever". "Between the lines" is something that would've fit perfectly on any of Martin Carr's late-boozik collections, and even "Pt.2", which is supposed to be kind of a "filler", sounds like an authentic instro comin' right outta Macca's home studio in '69/'70. At last, but surely not least, the songs that really make my day (week, month ,year ....) are the ones that make it pretty hard to decide if it's actually impossible to label them, or if they just seem to fit in any of your fave descritpions ,which is, I guess, what it's all about when it comes to originality, and the songs in question are "After all" and "The only one". The waiting stops here! This should be more than enough to "fix" your "beat" addiction ..... even if you have to wait five more years for another one. .... and something a bit different, but you can cathc it on the same "stop" ....
15. ALEN CLAPP - Whenever we're together (Whenever we're together EP; Bus Stop) www.busstoplabel.com Throughout the nineties Alan Clapp has been exploring the wonders of a pop song, with his Orchestra and later with The Orange Peels, and this EP is just a snippet of his solo release, "Available light", probably his best offering to date. Since the title song is the only one here to be taken from the album, considering the "B-sides", it seems that he had a hell of a job deciding which ones to be left off it. Listening to these tracks is an incredible experience, because it makes your imagination run wild, visualising the most unexpected musical collaborations. Most of the time, the sound recalls the early seventies Rundgren-geneering, but it's the other side of the desk that's busy. "Whenever we're together" is something that J.Mascis would've come up with, had he continued with the stuff he's written for the "Grace of my heart" soundtrack, "Sad september", with it's melodic "wilsonisms" and despite the autumnly title, would've fitted perfectly on any original Californian 6Ts sunshine-harmony concept, and the third song, called "Night falls", sounds kinda like The Pearlfishers' take on an early Neil Young melody. If you're into this kind of pop sophistication, I'm sure you'll have "Available light" even before the EP ends. Clap your hands for Allen Clapp !!! Since I've just mentioned them, it's always good to hear the sophisticated, countrified folky pop of ...
16. VELVET CRUSH - Faster days (Teenage symphonies for God; Creation) whitesoul.members.easyspace.com Though the next band doesn't really fit tonight's concept, they sure know how to jangle when they want to, so here's an example ...
17. THE LUCKY BISHOPS - Life in hell (Grimstone; Woronzow) www.woronzow.co.uk The Lucky Bishops' second long-playing effort offers exactly the same concept as their debut, and it's mostly about being completely different from anything you're likely to hear these days. As soon as you check out the CD artwork, you'll get an impression of a moderndaze re-working of the enigmatic machine from the "Relics" cover, and the sound you're about to experience isn't too far from that. The music is inspired mostly by late sixteez pop/psych/prog usual suspects, but it still has an additional dimension that will make you keep pushin' the rewind-button, just to make sure of what you've just heard. The album opens with what you'd call a classic 'Bishopsound, chockfull of quirky rhythm changes and out-of-tyme harmonies. Also, it's not very usual to have a perfect popsyke song, with an infectous melody, recalling The Beatles only in it's rawking parts, which is the case with "You come alive". "Doppleganger" will have your head spinning as fast the CD itself (33 rpm is not fast enough!), wondering what in the hell has got you. Once you think it's just another punk-rock song, it takes a 180 degree turn, getting back to some of Syd's most adventurous musical ideas, while "Napoleon" sounds kinda like The Byrds on 78 rpm, complete with the characteristic multipart-harmonies and the jangly 12-string, turning into a classic Bacharachian, loungy instrumental middle eight. "In everything I saw" is, in this case an unusual but a very welcome, Rundgren-erated, piano based arrangement of a song that wouldn't seem outta place on the top of any mainstream chart, "Wait for no one" incorporates some jazzy chord progressions and sunshiny vocals to generate an example of the music for new "millennium", as foreseen by Curt Boettcher, and in "Pigeon", "she said" something quite different, but I'm sure you'll memorize it just as well as the other one. "Strange times" is full of those significant Lucky-vintage-keys, delivering an easylistening popsyke, with a "wondermint" flavour, with a wild, fuzzed-out organ solo taking the song ........ well, somewhere way out. If you're looking for something that could be described as an audio-kaleidoscope, look no further, cuz with this one, you're about to get "lucky"! Here's another new British release to take notice of, probably one of Englands best kept pop secrets (on it's way to be unvailed lately!) ....
18. KELLY'S HEELS - "I want" Doesn't get ( Bent over backwards; Warmfuzz) While we're still in U.K., why not check out one of the most authentic folk-rockin' tunes of the second generation, to come from this side of the Atlantic ....
19. THE BARRACUDAS - We're living in violent times (This ain't my time/Anthology; Sanctuary/Castle) Thankfuly, folk-rock is not all about "protestin' ", there's also what you'd call an acid-folk or somehing ........ so, let's go sowing ...
20. THE SEEDS - Try to understand (Flower punk; Drop Out) ...... and another one of those punky folk sounds by .....
21. THE RAGAMUFFINS - Push don't pull (Ignition; Sundazed) www.sundazed.com .... with Sean Boniwell before he'd turned the Machine on, which reminds us to wish him a happy birthday .... a coupla days late though. ....... and a coupla years forward, to check out power-pop's unsung heroes from Memphis, Tennesee ......
22. THE SCRUFFS - Sad cafe (Wanna meet ...; Nothern Hights) .... to be followed with their Aussie counterpart, formerly also know as The Scruffs and also having the album of the same name (!?!?), now called ......
23. THE WAKE-UPS -Can't believe my luck (Wanna meet ....; Laughing Outlaw) www.laughingoutlaw.com ..... on their way to the "big stars" now ........ and here's another brand new release, somewhat an Orange Humble Band branch, featuring Andy Bautovich, Mitch Easter and Jamie Hoover among others and calling themselves .....
24. CORONET BLUE - So many (The mystery song) (s.t; Laughing Outlaw) www.laughingoutlaw.com .... here's another super-jangly one, from a while ago, by ...
25. BEATHOVEN - Please don't go (No hit wonders from down-under; ZIP) www.theinnocentsandbeathoventasmania.com www.ziprecords.com ...... perfectly fitting into the concept, just like the next one, resurrecting themselves from the past and out of .....
26. THE SECRETS - I'm not cryin' (Time will come; Secret Deals) www.secretdeals.com.au an ultimate collector's item! The Secrets carry us through the secrets of down-under time-traveling, along the contemporary sounding vintage tunes and vintage sounding contemporary tunes as well as some out of time classics. (write fo the whole review) These days, there's also plenty of jangle down-under, so heres ...
27. JACK & THE BEANSTALK - 10.000 sunny days (Vodka line EP; Parasol/Rhythm Barrel) www.parasol.com www.geocities.com/algerij ..... gathering every audio aspect from their past, present and future .... the "chiltones" of the power-pop essence ..... McGuinnious jangle ..... hi-class pop/vocal sophistication .... (write for the whole review) ..... and another new POPISM entry from the same continent, extremely jangly on this one ...
28. THE GREEN CIRCLES - She breathes (Get on the outside of this; Sexy Diablo) greencircles.virtualave.net How could I ever resist the next one not to be .....
29. THE SMALL FACES - Green circles (The first Immediate album; Sequel) .... by Plonk, God bless him. That was a quick time-digression, and we're back to "now" like pow, to check out the U.S. mod-ish jangle, instead of the most usual garagey freakbeat by ...
30. THE INSOMNIACS - Tear it out (Get something going; Estrus) ...... as well as some French pop-folk from the fabulous new album by ......
31. SWEET APPLE PIE - Wardour street (Everybody wants to be a supertiger; Spirit of Jungle) Being a pop band in France isn't exactly a perfect starting point for international stardom .... except maybe if you taste like a "sweet apple pie". These guys actualy start from worldwide fame and then, they'll maybe get back on the national scene ..... when they find the time off the touring shedule all over the globe ...... yes, they're THAT good! It's all about the B-bands-and-more influences, with an irresistable, omnipresent vintage electric-piano and three-part harmonies in the arrangements, but it still sounds sooo varied. There are some crystal clear "blurs" of XTseen quirky popsyke, full of infectious hooks and stop'n'start dynamics (Supertiger & Mr.Goodguy), a touch of melodic jazzy experiments right from the "stereo-laboratory" (Instalation instructions), as well as some reminiscings of Ken Stringfellow getting back to The Posies' debut album Hollies-roots in the "back of a car" (Sun inside). And that's not all ..... Can you imagine CSN&Y doing their harmonious take on some of J.Mascis' ballads (?!?!), well you can get it right "From the outside", along with the vocal-outro taken from the "wild side", and if you're looking for some (almost) usual CSN&Y stuff, try to dig "Underground" and you'll find them doing something that sounds like an imaginary Woodstock-version of "Uno mundo", complete with the handclaps in the end, though it must be one of the wee-hour gigs cuz it doesn't seem too crawdy. The mid-'60s happy-go-lucky sound of "Lalala" and the McGuinnish jangle of "Wardour street" could be seen as plain decade-tributes only by the profane consumer because they're a lot more than that, and as a proof of the band's crative potential, all you have to do is "Look up", where you can almost see the Abbey Road ambience "coming in through the bathroom window" to find Rod Argent playing his keyboard in a tub. Taste it !!! In fact, eat it all, there's plenty for all !!!

As for tonight's radio IDs, we had Michael Mazzarella of The Rooks, saying hello from NYC and advising us to play it LOUD!. Then we had Paul Chastain of Velvet Crush, Peter Rechter of The Secrets and Joe Algeri of Jack & The Beanstalk.
