On a Wing and a Prayer - Summary

On a Wing and a Prayer -Full account

My name is Tim Saunders and ever since my teenage years the road signs stating ‘The North’ have held a fascination for me. After reading a book about the man who first reached North Cape (or Nordkapp) by car in 1955, I have had a desire to go there by motorcycle.  North Cape is a little over 700 miles inside the Arctic Circle in Norway and looks over the Arctic Ocean. To add an incentive to save, plan and go, I thought that perhaps others could benefit from my trip, hence my request for sponsorship. I shall be covering all expenses myself so all monies raised will be given to the Hospice.

Why ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’? The Wing is the seventeen year old Honda Silverwing motorcycle I shall be using for the trip, and the prayers are mine and those offered up by friends.  I am receiving much support from my church, the Braintree Baptist Church:

Loving and Serving; Growing in Christ

On my trip I hope to visit Betania Nordkapp, a church who claim to be the most northerly Baptist Church in the world!

££££ How to sponsor me.

The route to be taken is from Braintree, where Farleigh has a day care centre, to Newcastle upon Tyne, by DFDS Seaways to Kristiansand in southern Norway and then due north for around 1,500 miles to North Cape.C..c..cold The accommodation will be my tent but I reserve the right to wimp out and find something warmer if the weather turns too nasty – I am no hero!  In 1991 I did a similar fund raising trip with a tent on a thirty year old Velocette motorcycle from Chelmsford to John O’Groats, then to Land's End and back to Chelmsford. 2100 miles took eight days at an average speed of 33 mph. In 1992 I read the story of the first man to reach North Cape by car. This was Richard Pape in 1955 who then drove his Austin Westminster "From Cape Cold to Cape Hot" - in South Africa. Once I reach Nordkapp I shall be returning home! 1996 saw me in Norway behind the wheel of a luxury coach.  This simply reinforced my desire to go further north by bike.

I am suggesting sponsorship per hundred miles covered. Should I be unable to complete the trip this method will enable me to gather in money. How much? That is your decision. It costs £3,600 each day to run the hospice so please be generous. Multiply the amount promised per hundred miles by thirty five as I expect to cover 3,500 miles. E.g. 5p will total £1.75, 10p = £3.50, 50p = £17.50. Too complicated? Then just promise me an amount!
