UNION CHURCH, CROUCH END

(Baptist / United Reformed)

Who are we?

Union Church is a group of Christian believers, trying to put the teachings of Jesus Christ into practice, and to share our way of life with others in our neighbourhood. We are a diverse community of different ages and backgrounds, living mainly within a mile of the Church buildings, and reflecting the ethnic and cultural diversity of Crouch End.

We are affiliated to the Baptist Union of Great Britain and to the United Reformed Church (which is formed from a union of Presbyterian and Congregational Churches). However, many of our members come from other Christian traditions.

Where have we come from?

In 1974 two local churches with distinguished histories came together as one Church. They were Park Chapel Congregational Church and Ferme Park Baptist Church. As the new Church was born, so work began on our current buildings on the site of the old Baptist Church.

The Community Centre was built first, with a worship area added above it. Today the whole building, with the house next door, are used for a variety of community activities, at the centre of which is the worshipping community.

How we work

We place a strong emphasis on sharing responsibility for church life between our members. We have a minister, a church community worker, and a group of deacons elected by the church members, but all important decisions about the life of the church are made by the Church Meeting, a forum for all church members which meets monthly.

What we do on Sundays

The central part of our church life is our worship on Sundays.

At 10.30am we have our WORSHIP, when our church family comes together. Children aged from three upwards take part in the SUNDAY CLUB, which meets during the service, and joins the rest of the church towards the end of worship. CRECHE facilities are also available.

COMMUNION is celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month. Our belief is that anyone who loves Jesus Christ and seeks to follow him, is welcome to share bread and wine with us at our Communion service.

Other regular activities

Our CHURCH PROGRAMME during the week varies from season to season. There will sometimes be a discussion group or other midweek evening meetings at the Church. There are communion services on Wednesday lunchtimes, once or twice a month, and two fellowship groups meet weekly on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.  During Lent 2001 we are meeting for ecumenical Bible studies at Christ Church, Crouch Hill N8, on the five Wednesdays starting on 7th March, meetings starting at 7.45pm for 8pm.

The lower floor is designed for use as a COMMUNITY CENTRE, as we believe part of our response to Jesus Christ is to offer ourselves in service to local people. Church members run CARERS AND TODDLERS clubs on four mornings a week, a fortnightly afternoon TEA DANCE and an occasional CHARITIES FAIR.

An ART CLUB meets every Friday morning, open to everybody. We are also pleased to lease our premises to other community groups, or to individuals for classes, wedding receptions and children's parties etc.

If we can be of service to you, please contact us, or come to one of our services, where you will be very welcome. If you have any questions about our Christian faith, or about the way our Church works, most people present on a Sunday will be able to help you, or to point you to someone who can.
