Celebrates 88th Birthday

Mrs Elizabeth Couperthwaite celebrated her 88th birthday aniversary May 2 at the home of her grandaughter, Mrs Russel Tufts, where she redides.
Mrs Couperthwaite was born May 2, 1855 in Stewarton, Scotland. She had one own sister and several half brothers and sisters. The own sister is still living in Scotland and recently she and her husband celebrated their 60th Wedding aniversary.
The subject of this sketch is the mother of 10 children, 6 sons and 4 daughters. 5 of whom are living. Those living are: Mrs Elizabeth Blair, mother of Mrs Tufts; the eldest daughter, Patricia and one son living in Scotland; one son John, has his home in South Africa and the 5th member of the family James is of Painesville, Ohio. Mr. Couperthwaite died in 1917. There are 13 gran children, 9 great grand children and one great great grand child whose father was killed while serving in the R.A.F. before the babys birth.
Five of the grand children are serving with the Allies in the present war. One grandson is a captain in the Signal Corps of the Engineer Dept. of the British 8th Army, spent 7 years in Egypt and travelled across the desert with the 8th Army under George Montgomery to North Africa. His home is in England. One grandson is in the British Navy, was on the H.M.S. Hood when it was sunk by a torpedo. He was rescued. One grandson is a U.S.A. Aviation Cadet and training in Texas. Another grand son is training in the Engineer Corps in South Africa. A grand daughter is serving with the A.T.S. in Scotland. The A.T.S. is an organization similar to the W.A.A.C.'s in our country. Thus we can understand that this elderly lady is much interested in war news and is anxiously awaiting good news and final victory.
Twenty years ago Mrs Couperthwaite came to the U.S.A. remaining five years before returning to Scotland. Ten years later she again travelled across the ocean coming back with her daughter, Mrs Blair, who made a visit to her native land. That was five years ago and owing to the war she has not returned to her home. Considering herself an evacuee from the waring countries. Mrs Couperthwaite is possessed of a pleasing and friendly disposition, loves to visit, recounts interesting stories of her girlhood and later experiences and extends a warm welcome to callers in the gracious manner of her homeland.
When the writer called at the Tufts residence she was busy knitting which is one of her favourite pastimes. The hour spent during the visit was a delightful interlude on a busy day and will remain with us a pleasant memory.
