PRINCESS MONONOKE (DVD) Excellent beautifully animated adventure from Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki. In a semi-mythical ancient Japan a young warrior finds himself in the middle of a battle between industrialisation and encroaching nature. Morally complex and strikingly imaginative the English language dub boasts contributions from Billy Bob Thornton Gillian Anderson Billy Crudup and Minnie Driver. You may not have heard of Princess Mononoke a film released in it's native Japan in 1996 and given a short but impactful release in the US by Disney last year. Curiously denied a theatrical run in the UK Disney have finally got round to releasing it on DVD and video and it is well worth the wait. Although distributed by Disney Princess Mononoke is not exactly your typical Mickey-Mouse-animated feature. Similarly although a Japanese animation it doesn't sit comfortably beside the usual Manga output seen in this country being neither pornographic excessively violent nor in the other extreme sickeningly sentimental. Instead it is a beautifully (traditionally) animated fantasy adventure based around Japanese mythology with a number of complex characterisations and a philosophical plot. True there are a handful of violent moments but this is a deeply affecting and strikingly designed drama. Directed by Hayao Muyazaki one of Japan's most respected - and influential - animators this is the first film from his Studio Ghibli to reach these shores and it would be nice if the others (including My Neighbour Totoro Kiki's Delivery Service and Laputa Castle In The Sky) would definitely follow. Unfortunately Disney seem to have lost interest so the wait might be a long one. This version of the film includes an English language dub written by Neil Gaiman and performed by a variety of Hollywood stars including Billy Bob Thornton Claire Danes and Minnie Driver. With the exception of Danes who is depressingly bland voicing the main role the rest of the English language cast are excellent and a lot of work has gone into making sure that it doesn't distract from the film itself. For purists (indeed for anyone) the DVD also includes the original Japanese version with literal English subtitles - a better option perhaps and while the DVD is relatively light on special features the choice of languages and subtitles is perhaps the most thorough and impressive. Some will dismiss Mononoke as either a kids cartoon as a violent Japanese Manga cartoon or perhaps even as something resembling Pokémon. It is none of these instead it is an extraordinary film which deserves pride of lace in any self respecting DVD collection. DVD Version Widescreen: 1.85:1 Stereo: Dolby Digital 5.1 (English Japanese French) Subtitles: English English for the hearing impaired French Special Features: Trailer Behind the scenes featurette ... Unadulterated Cat The Unadulterated Cat is becoming an endangered species as more and more of us settle for those boring mass-produced cats the ad-men sell us - the pussies that purr into their gold-plated food bowls on the telly. But the Campaign for Real Cats sets out to change all that by helping us to recognize a true unadulterated cat when we see one. For example: real cats have ears that look like they've been trimmed with pinking shears; real cats never wear flea collars or appear on Christmas cards or chase anything with a bell in it; real cats do eat quiche. And giblets. And butter. And anything else left on the table if they think they can get away with it. Real cats can hear a fridge door opening two rooms away. ...
