AMERICAN BEAUTY (DVD) Lester Burnham an American suburbanite decides to face his mid-life crisis head on and quits his job starts bodybuilding and annoys his selfish wife and confused daughter. Finally finding happiness again before he dies. Elegant funny and emotionally lacerating drama staring Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. A smash hit with both critics and the cinema going public with its five Oscars and six BAFTAs it is possible to imagine American Beauty should be due for a serious backlash by now. It’s not going to happen though as this film is every bit as good as you’ve heard it is. Directed by respected and innovative Brit theatre director Sam Mendes American Beauty was pounced upon by British newspapers who used the directors nationality to proclaim the film as a triumph of the British film industry. A nonsense of course despite the obvious pleasures of seeing a local lad do well across the pond. Having said that while American Beauty is certainly beautiful it is oddly rather un-American at the same time. Kevin Spacey’s Lester Burnham is a white-collar suburban schmuck. His self-consciously perfect wife (Bening) and his angst-ridden daughter both think he’s a loser and he has to admit that they have a point. Matters don’t improve when he develops a crush on his daughter’s sultry class-mate but rather than descending into a Lolita-esque maelstrom Lester uses his mild-obsession as a catalyst to change his life. Quitting his job and blackmailing his ex-bosses Lester embarks on a quest for happiness which horrifies his wife (who is having an affair with her real-estate rival) and daughter (who is falling for the slightly sinister boy-next-door). However such a summary of the film does not do it justice at all. Mendes and writer Alan Ball have created an exquisite satire of American suburbia. An easy target perhaps but the film never takes the easy options. Each character manages to be both sympathetic and objectionable particularly Lester whose actions veer from the pathetic to the noble. Armed with a vivid colour palate Mendes manages to create something genuinely cinematic out of a premise which could – in lesser hands – have become restricted by its suburban setting. His actors respond splendidly – Spacey won his second Oscar here and proves once again that few actors can rival him when it comes to cinematic sarcasm. Bening is excellent too and the supporting cast (including Thora Birch Wes Bentley Mena Suvari and Chris Cooper) make an impression despite the leading couple’s screen stealing performances. Topped and tailed with an excellent score American Beauty is a film of exceptional quality. Comic but not specifically a comedy. Dramatic but not specifically a drama. It resembles the roses that grow in Bening’s garden: beautiful delicate and capable of drawing blood. WHSmith is the UK's number one family retailer selling a range of products that extends across education, entertainment and information. Each year WHSmith High Street stores sell enough pens to circle the earth; enough books to fill a library shelf from London to Edinburgh; and enough paper to write a letter to everyone in the world. WH Smith also sell 122 million magazines and newspapers each year - enough to make a pile 69 times taller than Mount Everest.
The first High Street store was a small news vendor opened in 1792 in Little Grosvenor Street, London, by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna. Today, WHSmith has 545 High Street stores, covering over 3 million square feet of selling space and employing 17,000 staff. Clubcard, the Company's loyalty scheme, has more than 5 million members.
Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery form the core of the High Street business. WHSmith sell more books than any other retailer in England, Scotland and Wales. For example, one in three copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were bought from WHSmith in the first weekend of release. WHSmith promote new authors with their Fresh Talent showcase and also have the Thumping Good Read Award that is voted for by members of Clubcard.
WHSmith's major stores stock more than 45,000 product lines, whereas an average food supermarket carries around 10,000 lines.
WHSmith currently holds a strong market share in each of the core categories in which it trades - books, stationery, news, magazines and entertainment. WH Smith's strategy is to exploit the strength, power and potential of the WHSmith brand to provide the very best service and value for money for their customers, shareholders and wider community.
