Wil Is A Genius... And It's Official.

In a triumph of outright utter sense, I walked away with the grand trophy (its grandness is illustrated below) in a radio episode of the BBC's 'GENIUS' programme... when Germaine Greer and the audience voted for my idea, to make all new prisons out of Lego.

Me & host Dave Gorman... one of us is the weirdy beardy one... you decide for yourself which that might be.

The atmosphere at Broadcasting House was suitably electric... the backstage BBC sandwiches were suitably eclectic... and my fellow contestants and I sat in our rightful place, below stage height, to stare up in wonder at the magnificence of celebrity before us. If you're unfamiliar with the show, several contestants each discuss their wonderfully alternative ideas with Dave Gorman and a celeb' guest... in this case, Germaine Greer, no less, who decides whether the originator is a genius or not. The selected few are then given over to the mercy of the audience, who vote for the overall winner. However, instead of winning any overalls, one takes away the chalice of wonder which is the Genius Trophy.

My idea for Lego Prisons has many advantages. Each new lag is given a big bag of bricks, sufficient in number to construct their own cell. In addition to teaching them a useful building trade, they are given more bricks for good behaviour, to expand their quarters... or have bricks taken away for bad behaviour, which means they have smaller cells. At the end of their sentence, they take the cell apart and the Lego bricks are passed on to a new inmate. The result is that we always have the exact number of prison cells required. Never too many, never too few.

Dave Gorman also kept sociable company with the contestants afterwards, which I doubt many other beeb bods would've contemplated.

Broadcasting House in London... over the years, venue to a roughly equal measure of personal triumph, despair and vitriol.
