CARTOON FAQs

Do you offer discounts?

- Yes. To be fair to all my many clients, my charges for editorial cartoons... which are bloomin' low in any case... are fixed, but there's a discount if you commission four or more (can be one cartoon each for four consecutive issues)... and an even greater discount if commissioning twelve or more. So, if you have a monthly or weekly title, you can get my lowest possible rate. Advertisement or special purpose cartoons are by negotiation.

How do you come up with the gags?

- Most typically, we get in contact on a set date, prior to publication. You'll provide me with a subject or topic, which might be literally a few words, or it could be the text of an article. I'll then make several written gag suggestions based on that. Once you've agreed a gag set-up, I'll then draw up the actual cartoon.

What do you mean by "written gag examples"?

- Once you've given me the topic or article, I'll supply several gag ideas in written form. If one is okay, that's great... or, I'll use your feedback to make further suggestions, until you're happy with the gag. For example, the written format for the cartoon on this page would be:

The desktop computer has exploded, killing the operator rather horribly. The I.T manager hangs from the office light fitting and says to us:- OF COURSE, ONCE WE INSTALL THE V2.1 SOFTWARE UPGRADE, THIS WILL HARDLY EVER HAPPEN.

How do you create a regular cartoon character?

- Together, we'd look at the type of humour which would appeal to your readers... I'd suggest several ideas, putting some rough sketches and example gag ideas together. We'd discuss the level of humour that should feature in the cartoons... on occasion this might be quite mild and gentle, or sometimes it can be a little risqué. The jokes might be very industry-specific, or they might have to be more generally obvious. Each case is unique.

In what format do you supply cartoons?

- Within reason, I can supply the cartoon in most popular formats (tif, gif, jpeg... etc) and, if you wish, ready resized to drop into your page space... however, I always suggest that I can send you the full-size TIF version. For an editorial cartoon such as the one above, this would be around an A4 size origination at 600dpi. This is a much bigger file size than you're likely to need, even for glossy print work, but it does give the page layout person maximum scope to resize it and fit it to your page. This means if you have any last minute editorial changes, you can resize the cartoon instantly to fit your requirements, but still keep the quality up... making life easier for you. If the job requires an exact size, I can create the cartoon to fit that, too.

What if my profession or subject is too dull, staid or boring to make a good cartoon?

- Hey... it's my job to come up with funny ideas and I've yet to come across a subject that can't be turned into a gag. In fact, it's the drab day to day mundane factors... or the industry-specific minutia... which make for the best gags. Put me to the test by getting me to suggest some ideas for your own publication or trade. Go on... get in touch.
