Wimbledon went 2-0 ahead, via a penalty and an own-goal, and it seemed that even the God's were against the Blues on this day of reckoning. But salvation was at hand. Granham Stuart scored a penalty before the break, Barry Horne fired home an absolute screamer and then Stuart was on hand once again to spark delirious scenes of celebration. Everton 1 - 1 Coventry City May 10th 1998 Four years later, Goodison braced itself for another final-day decider. Facing Coventry City, they were fully aware that even victory could still consign them to relegation if Bolton Wanderers managed to win at Chelsea. Gareth Fattelly sent the home supporters into raptures with a stunning goal after just 7 minutes but nerves were once again stretched to the limit as the afternoon progressed. This was certainly no match for the faint-hearted but a sudden roar 15 minutes from time greeted the news that Chelsea had scored and Everton were no two points clear of the drop. The Toffees were then awarded a penalty-kick but Nick Barmby missed it and Dion Dublin drew Coventry level with only five minutes remaining. Another goal for the visitors would have sent Everton down but 1-1 was how it finished and how Goodison celebrated!
