I'm 7 years old at last. I'm
very excited. I can go to school now. The school is in the soldier's barracks. I'm going to learn how to be brave and how to fight. People say that the older boys will pick fights with me and beat me till it hurts ... that there will never be enough food ... that I will have to lie and cheat and steal to survive. |
| Whatever happens my father, Sparcus, must
never hear me complain. For I am Spartan and proud of it. They will teach me how to read
and write, but we Spartans don't think that's important. To be a soldier is what we all
want. To defeat Athens. When I am 20 I will have to pass a difficult test of fitness, military ability, and leadership skills. If I pass I become a full citizen and a Spartan soldier. If I fail, and I don't intend to, I will merely be Periokos ... middle class!!! |
