I don't appear to have certain commands

This could be for several reasons:

  1. The command you want is not available with the version of DOS you are using.
  2. The command may have been deleted to save space.
  3. You may not have the PATH variable set correctly.
  4. If you are using a boot disk you may not have transferred the required command.
In the first case the best option is to use a version of DOS which does have the command.
To fix the second and fourth problem simply copy across the external commands from the same version of DOS.
The third can be fixed by setting the path variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (or temporarily from the command line). To do this you add the line:
PATH C:\DOS
Assuming that your DOS directory is DOS.

If you are using Windows 9x many DOS commands are missing, look in the \TOOLS\OLDMSDOS directory of your CD-ROM. You may find what you want there, if not see Where can I get DOSSHELL?
