Books Which I'd Recommend

MS-DOS Made Simple Cover

TITLE:

MS-DOS Made Simple

Author(s):

Ian Sinclair

ISBN:

0-7506-2069-2

PUBLISHER:

Made Simple Books

Comments:

A must for the Windows point and click junky! You'd be surprised at just how useful a bit of DOS know how is if you've never used it before. OK this book doesn't go into fantastic detail but it's enough to get you started (it's what I first learnt with). It describes MS-DOS 6.22 which has a lot of extras which were cut out from the version of DOS which comes with Windows 95 and 98, chances are that when you find out about these you'll want them.

Pocket PCRef Cover

TITLE:

Pocket PCRef

Author(s):

Thomas J. Glover and Millie M. Young

ISBN:

1-885071-13-2

PUBLISHER:

Sequoia Publishing, Inc.

Comments:

As far as I'm concerned the most useful information contained in this book is a list of many of the DOS commands and their usage (although unfortunately it does leave out the undocumented switches), very handy indeed. It also lists useful Windows 3.1 and 95 shortcut keys. Other data includes:
  • ASCII codes.
  • Keyboard scan codes.
  • Pinouts: Printer Port; COM port; Video card; Keyboard, Mouse; USB and many more.
  • PC memory map and hardware I/O map.
  • A brief list of software interrupts.
  • BIOS error codes (certain manufacturers only).
I have found this a very useful book.

Peter Norton's Inside The PC Seventh Edition Cover

TITLE:

Peter Norton's Inside The PC Seventh Edition

Author(s):

Peter Norton and John Goodman

ISBN:

0-672-31041-4

PUBLISHER:

Sams Publishing

Comments:

This book is a really great resource for learning about computers in depth. It encourages the exploration of your system by using software and also by nosing around inside the case. Be warned this is definitely not a book for beginners! It's not really something I'd want to read cover to cover, but it makes an excellent reference book. Well worth getting in my view.

Note:

There is now an eighth edition, I've never seen it so I can't comment on it. I believe that the new ISBN is 0672315327.
