First game of
the season and the lack of match practice really showed up as Kelsall were
hammered 5-0 by Hartford. An awful first half lead to a 4-0 scoreline at
the break. No tackling, no commitment and a lot of the time no mid-field,
lead to Hartford pulling holes in the Kelsall defence. The lack of support
for the defence lead to many of the goals, that coupled with a general
unwillingness to "put a foot in" meant that Hartford had an easy time of
it.
Second half,
all change, after conceding an early goal Kelsall begin to play OK. Outplaying
Hartford for much of the second half, but chances are still not taken.
My opinion is that if we'd played like we did in the second half in the
first half, we'd have at least drawn with them, but it didn't happen.
The only good
thing to come from this match is the fact that we played better in the
second half than the first, opposed to last year, when we generally collapsed
in the second half.

Kelsall played
fairly well for the first half. Actually no, that's not true, we played
shite, but better shite than the week before. Poor for much of the game,
we conceded a few stupid goals and a few goals that shouldn't have been
allowed. The only bright spot of the match was Wilgose's goal. Running
through on goal, Andy latched onto a through ball and lobbed the keeper
Still only a consolation goal though.

Having played
quite well in the first half, and scoring through Shaun's brilliant effort,
Kelsall played worse in the scond half. Not playing badly, but not playing
particularly well either, Kelsall were holding them for much of the second
half, but a few quick goals lead to a slightly unfair scoreline. I missed
a sitter, falling for me in the box, all the time in the world I placed
the ball squarely into the keepers arms. Not many chances created for much
of the match.
Vernon had a
solid game in net for much of the time, clearing many through balls when
needed to, at fault for a couple of goals, but only to be expected from
a reserve keeper. Only his first game of the season as a keeper, he played
just one in goal last season, also against Frodsham Park, not as succesful
this time around however.

Playing well
for much of the first half, Kelsall took a 1-0 lead into the break. A few
missed chances, noticeably Wilgose heading over the bar from 3yds out,
and Shaun missing a sitter. A good goal however, 35yds out, Ross hits a
shot towards goal, the keeper can only palm it into the net, and Kelsall
have the lead, for the first time this season!
Second half,
and two substitutions, Me on for Adam and AP on for Wilgose. A battling
second half, and Winnington equalise. A few mintues later however Kelsall
are back in front, a ball knocked over the top and I played it over the
top of the defence for Shaun, Shaun ran through and finished it, 2-1. Shortly
afterwards, a ball is knocked up in the air, I head it over for Shaun to
run through and score again, 3-1. Later, a good move down the left flank
leads to Shaun being put through again, he squared it to me, one touch
to control then a shot into the top corner for 4-1. A scrappy goal conceded
later on for 4-2, but only after they have 2 goals disallowed for offside.
With 2 minutes remaining, Kelsall hold on for an excellent victory.

After a fairly
even first half, with good chances wasted at either end, a slip in the
defence lead to Vale taking a 1-0 scoreline into the break. A ball was
knocked across, with no Vale players attacking it the defence leaves it
for the keeper. Andrew, a bit suprised by this, would have been able to
pick up the ball and clear it, but he slipped on the muddy pitch and this
left Vale to tuck the ball into the now empty net, an unlucky goal. Neither
side deserving the lead at the break, Shaun having been denied 3 times
almost brilliantly by the Vale keeper. Vale missed chances too, Brocklebank
keeping us in the game for most of them, but a few wayward shots from good
chances too, including a messed up run on the keeper.
Second half
saw a slightly better performance by Kelsall, but still poor. Vale score
early in the half and Kelsall look down. But a free kick is won 25yds from
goal, Div stepped up and scored, curling it into the far corner across
the goal. This revitalised Kelsall and when a ball was played through the
middle, Shaun's brilliant lob was drifting just wide of the post when Vernon
stopped it and put it into the net. 2-2. Unfortunately that was all that
was to come from Kelsall, conceding two goals later on, including a free
header at a corner.
One further
note, perhaps not part of a review, but more a general comment. Vale's
number 8 is an absolute tosser. After fouls on Ross, Me and Div he proceeded
to kick Paddy while he was on the floor, swearing all the way through,
he was booked for kicking the ball away after one of his fouls, this was
however only the first of his major fouls. After kicking Paddy on the floor,
the ref calls him over, everyone is expecting his imminant sending off,
but no. The ref tells him that "this is your second time' (my arse, more
like 8th) and says that he should be walking now, but he'll give him one
more chance, once more and he's off. A few more digs later on, but nothing
major, then again there wasn't much time for him to do anything. Wanker.
